Developing exhibitions requires substantial work behind the scenes – negotiating loans, insurance, preparing for display and sometimes, taonga travelling long distances to return to Aotearoa. In order for Te Rā to voyage home safely through observing tīkanga, the Te Rā project team was fortunate to secure funding from Creative New Zealand. This enabled Māori conservators Jade Hadfield and Rangi Te Kanawa to go to the British Museum and work together with their conservators to enable Te Rā to voyage home.
